Entrevista com a banda Symfobia

 

Symfobia é uma banda da Eslováquia formada pelo tecladista Feri Molnar em 2007, e ativa desde 2013 até os dias atuais, sendo do estilo metal sinfônico, e é liderada por duas vocalistas femininas, o que representa um grande diferencial.

“Desde o lançamento de seu primeiro álbum, Way of the Queen, Symfobia tem se apresentado com bandas de metal mundialmente famosas, como Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Therion e Sabaton [...], bem como se apresentou nos maiores festivais de música na Eslováquia e na República Tcheca - Topfest, Masters of Rock, More than Fest, Legend Festival, Rock pod kameňom e muitos mais”.

Até agora, a banda Symfobia lançou dois álbum: Way of the Queen, no ano de 2015 e Smog of Tomorrow, no ano de 2019.

A banda Symfobia concedeu entrevista pela primeira vez a um blog brasileiro de música e literatura, o Lady Black Raven.

01. Obrigado por nos conceder esta entrevista. Faça uma pequena apresentação para o público brasileiro que ainda não conhece a banda Symfobia.

Dominika: Symfobia é uma banda de metal sinfônico da Eslováquia que começou a se formar em 2007, mas a banda se estabeleceu em 2014 enquanto gravava nosso primeiro álbum: Way of the Queen. Nossas músicas são dominadas por arranjos orquestrais, solos de guitarra proeminentes e partes de coro. Em ambos os nossos álbuns, colaboramos com coros profissionais, o que não é comum na cena metal eslovaca. Além disso, somos uma das poucas bandas de metal sinfônico no mundo que tem duas vocalistas lideradas por mulheres, o que nos permite experimentar e nos dá a oportunidade de trabalhar criativamente com a linha vocal líder.

 02-Conte-nos como é o cenário do metal sinfônico na Eslováquia e de que forma a banda Symfobia contribui nesse cenário musical:

Dominika: A Eslováquia tem cerca de 5 milhões e meio de habitantes. O metal definitivamente não é muito convencional aqui, mas temos muitas bandas de rock e metal. Falando em metal sinfônico, existem poucas bandas, mas no palco profissional somos a única. Porém, não há muito espaço para crescimento profissional, então nosso único caminho é no exterior.

03. Qual a origem do nome ou o significado do nome da banda Symfobia?

Dominika: Não há uma grande história nisso. É sempre uma surpresa para quem não nos conhece. Algumas pessoas têm expectativas diferentes de nossa música apenas por ver o nome da banda. Podemos chamá-lo de contraste de puro antagonismo satírico :-)

04. Como surgiu a ideia do tecladista Feri Molnar de montar a banda Symfobia?

Feri: Sempre fui inclinado a esse estilo de música, e como o metal sinfônico não estava representado em nosso país, disse a mim mesmo que tentaria e daria uma chance. Demorou anos para o Symfobia atingir seu estágio atual.

05. Por favor, apresente-nos Dominika Hodáňová, que junto com a Erika Strečková, estará liderando os vocais da banda:

Erika: Dominika tem 25 anos e canta desde criança, estudou canto lírico durante 6 anos e atualmente continua seus estudos na universidade em Bratislava. Dominika é uma grande fã de metal, de bandas como Nightwish, Epica e Children of Bodom. Ela eventualmente mudou para o black e death metal. Mais tarde, ela descobriu o encanto do doom / rock ou da música experimental e atmosférica. Além de música, ela também é professora de canto e treinadora de equitação.

06.Como aconteceu o processo de composição e quais são as inspirações que a banda busca para criar o conceito de seus álbuns?

Erika: O processo de escrever e compor nossos álbuns é sempre interessante e todos nós  amamos porque passamos muito tempo juntos. Nosso tecladista Feri e o baterista Viliam têm a maior participação na composição de nossa música. Quanto às letras, nossos dois primeiros álbuns foram escritos pelo nosso letrista Rastislav Getta, pelo fato de eu sempre discutir assuntos com ele. Pela primeira vez, nós, Dominika e eu, estamos escrevendo as letras do nosso próximo terceiro álbum. E a inspiração? A própria vida. Nossas experiências e visões de vida.

07. Em se tratando do primeiro álbum, Way Of The Queen (2015), apresenta os temas do individualismo e a contradição humana, que dialogam com o mundo em que vivemos. Li em uma entrevista que seu recente algum Smog of tomorrow (2019) trata de questões mais profundas. A pergunta então é: como cada membro da banda contribui com suas próprias angústias pessoais ou perguntas existenciais para criar o conceito deste álbum?  

Erika: No Symfobia, cada membro é responsável por coisas diferentes. Nem todo membro pode fazer tudo, não é possível. É por isso que as letras foram e são obra dos cantores. Como mencionei, nós trabalhamos com um letrista antes, mas nosso novo álbum está nas mãos de Dominika e eu. Quanto aos outros membros, suas ansiedades pessoais ou questões existenciais são incorporadas à música que compõem ou tocam.

08.Durante a trajetória da banda qual foi o show/momento mais marcante?

Feri: Desde o lançamento de nosso álbum de estreia, Way of the Queen, tocamos com bandas de metal mundialmente famosas como Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Therion, Sabaton, Powerwolf e Amaranthe. Todos esses shows foram experiências incríveis. Cada show, seja em um clube ou em um festival, tinha seu charme, até mesmo o nosso show online do ano passado. Embora sentíssemos muita falta dos fãs e fosse um pouco difícil para nós aproveitar o show em um clube vazio, ainda ficamos muito felizes quando vimos vídeos de nossos fãs em sua sala de estar curtindo nosso show.

09.Quais são os planos e projetos para esse ano de 2021?

Feri: A pandemia global prejudicou a vida em todo o planeta. A indústria da música é um grupo particularmente afetado e a Symfobia não é uma exceção. Tivemos que remarcar nossa turnê na Tcheca com a lendária banda Tcheca CITRON três vezes, no verão passado nós nem tocamos em um único festival porque todos os grandes eventos foram cancelados. Este ano devemos tocar em festivais na Eslováquia e na República Tcheca, mas ainda não sabemos quais acontecerão e quais não. Então, estamos tentando focar em nosso terceiro álbum, compondo música e também estamos preparando um novo videoclipe.

10.Qual é o maior o desejo que permite a banda Symfobia continuar sonhando?

Erika: Eu não acho que temos um sonho ou desejo específico como banda. Certamente cada um de nós tem alguns desejos próprios que gostaríamos de alcançar na indústria musical, e isso é perfeitamente normal. Por exemplo, foi o suficiente para a nossa ex-cantora Simone o que ela viveu conosco e no ano passado ela decidiu se dedicar apenas à sua vida pessoal e familiar. Para mim, ainda não é o suficiente, porque não consigo imaginar minha vida sem essa banda no momento e sei que ainda temos um longo caminho pela frente. Ninguém sabe o que será daqui a um ou dois anos, mas enquanto formos um bom grupo e trabalharmos nossa música, acredito que viveremos belos momentos e realizaremos nossos desejos.

11. Eu gostaria de dizer que estou sempre torcendo por vocês. Eu desejo boas bênçãos para a banda Symfobia e que continuem levando para os nossos corações uma boa música que nos faça pensar e crescer como seres humanos. Por favor, deixe uma mensagem para o público brasileiro:

1. Thank you for giving us this interview. Make a small presentation for the Brazilian public that still does not know the band Symfobia. 

Dominika: Symfobia is a symphonic-metal band from Slovakia that started to form in 2007 but the band settled in 2014 while recording our first album: Way of the Queen. Our songs are dominated by orchestral arrangements, prominent guitar solos and choir parts. In both our albums we have collaborated with professional choir, which is not common on the Slovak metal scene. Also, we are one of the few symphonic-metal bands in the world that has two female-fronted singers, which allows us to experiment and gives us opportunity to work creatively with leading vocal line.

 2. Tell us about the symphonic metal scene in Slovakia and how the band Symfobia contributes to this music scene: 

Dominika: Slovakia has about 5 and a half million inhabitants. Metal music is definitely not mainstream here, but we have a lot of rock and metal bands. Speaking about symphonic metal, there are, or were few bands but on professional stage we are the only one. However, there is not much space for professional growth, so our only way is abroad.

 3. What is the origin of the name or the meaning of the name of the band Symfobia? 

Dominika: There isn’t a big story to it. It's always a surprise for those who don't know us. Some people have different expectations from our music just from seeing name of the band. We can call it a pure satirical antagonism- contrast J.

 4. How did keyboardist Feri Molnar's idea to create the band Symfobia come about? 

Feri: I have always been inclined to this style of music, and since symphonic metal was not represented in our country, I said to myself that I would try it and I'll give it a chance. It took years for Symfobia to reach its current stage.

5. Please introduce us to Dominika Hodáňová, who along with Erika Strečková, will be leading the band's vocals: 

Erika: Dominica is 25 years old and she has been singing since she was a child, she studied opera singing for 6 years and is currently continuing her studies at the university in Bratislava.          Dominika is a big metal fan. From bands like Nightwish, Epica and Children of Bodom, she eventually switched to black and death metal. She later discovered the charm of doom / rock or experimental and atmospheric music. In addition to music, she is also a singing teacher and horse riding coach.

6. How did the writing process happen and what are the inspirations that the band seeks to create the concept of their albums? 

Erika: The process of writing and composing our albums is always interesting and we all love it because we spend a lot of time together. Our keyboardist Feri and drummer Viliam have the biggest share in composing our music. As for the lyrics, our first two albums were written by our lyricist Rastislav Getta, with the fact that I always discussed topics with him. For the first time, we, Dominika and I, are writing the lyrics in our upcoming third album. And inspiration? Life itself. Our experiences and views on life.

7. When it comes to the first album, Way Of The Queen (2015), it presents the themes of individualism and human contradiction, which dialogue with the world in which we live. I read in an interview that your recent Smog of tomorrow (2019) deals with deeper issues. The question then is: how does each member of the band contribute their own personal anxieties or existential questions to create the concept for this album? 

Erika: In Symfobia, each member is in charge of different things. Not every member can do everything, it is not possible. That is why the lyrics were and are the work of the singers. As I mentioned, we worked with a lyricist before, but our new album is in the hands of Dominika and me. As for the other members, their personal anxieties or existential questions are incorporated in the music they compose or play.

8. During the band's trajectory, what was the most remarkable show / moment? 

Feri: Since the release of our debut album, Way of the Queen, we have performed with world-famous metal bands such as Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Therion, Sabaton, Powerwolf and Amaranthe. All these concerts were incredible experiences. Every concert, whether in a club or at a festival, had its charm, even our last year's online concert. Although we really missed the fans in the club and it was a bit difficult for us to enjoy the concert in an empty club, we were still really happy when we saw videos of our fans in their living room enjoying our concert.

9. What are the plans and projects for this year 2021? 

Feri: Global pandemic crippled life around the planet. The music industry is a particularly affected group and Symfobia is not an exception. We had to reschedule our tour in Czechia with the legendary Czech band CITRON three times, last summer we didn't even play at one single festival as all big events were cancelled.  This year we´re suppose to play at festivals in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, but we still don´t know which ones will take place and which ones will not. So we're trying to focus on our third album, composing music and also we´re preparing a new music video  

 10. What is the biggest desire that allows the Symfobia band to continue dreaming? 

Erika: I don't think we have a specific dream or desire as a band. Surely each of us has some desires of our own that we would like to achieve in the music industry, and it's perfectly normal. For example, it was enough for our former singer Simone what she experienced with us and last year she decided to devote herself only to her personal life and family. For me, it's not enough yet, because I can't imagine my life without this band at the moment and I know we still have a long way ahead of us. No one knows what will be in a year or two, but as long as we are a good group and work on our music, I believe that we will experience beautiful moments and fulfill our desires.
